Polimeni International’s proposal to build a 16-mile tunnel under Long Island Sound received a big endorsement from Gov. David Paterson last week.

Speaking before the Association for a Better Long Island, Paterson said that projects like this are what made the New York such a major metropolis.

“It’s not a matter of if, it’s a matter of when,” Paterson said.

Michael Polimeni said that the company’s plan to connect Bayville with Rye is already undergoing cost analysis from the state Department of Transportation. The tunnel, a private-public partnership, would cost between $12 and $16 billion.

Polimeni said finding financing for the ambitious project shouldn’t be a problem because of the steady stream of revenue expected once the toll tunnel opens for business
